What were the effects of appeasement?
Britain and France appeased Hitler allowing Germany to cease control of surrounding territories, and gain momentum. In result Hitler obtained the materials and military he desired to build his Third Reich. The League of Nations's appeasement of Germany assisted the start of World War II due to the tension it caused because of Germany's repeated betrayals of agreements and boundaries. Appeasement sparked one of the direct causes of World War II, Hitler's invasion of Poland. Hitler with his Blitzkrieg strategy, took Poland against the wishes of the League of Nations. Poland looked to Britain and France for resistance help against Hitler's army. Britain and France now had no option but to end appeasement, declare war on Germany, and turn to the policy of deterrence. Deterrence is a policy that is the exact opposite of appeasement because it involves actually inflicting punishment when an ultimatum was broken. Deterrence in the end won the Allies the war, while appeasement only delayed Hitler's advancing forces.
