Appeasement in Action
Chamberlain along with his constitutes of the League of Nations are known today as cowards, due to their use of the appeasement policy. Chamberlain used appeasement as an attempt to retreat from the threat of war and to stabilize his reign as Prime Minister. His use of appeasement is why during his time and through on to the present he is known as “The Coroner” because Chamberlain and his policy was one of the clear causes of the war. Appeasement was a policy of cowardice and giving into an aggressors demands. Chamberlain sought to pacify Hitler so he would no longer have desire to conquer. This idea was not as brilliant of a plan as Chamberlain thought, because once Hitler was appeased it strengthened his drive and motivation to continue cease countries. Appeasement showed Hitler that Chamberlain and The League of Nations were not capable or willing to punish him for any conquests which meant that under Appeasement, Hitler was free to do almost anything he pleased.
End of Appeasement
Hitler's reign of conquest and aggression ended when he took his freedom under appeasement to the brink and attacked Poland. His invasion of Poland was the official start of the war. This invasion was permitted because appeasement was unable to stop Hitler from militarizing. It also ended his army from traveling to Poland where thousands of jews and Polish natives were killed. The land taken over was used for Concentration camps and war bases. World War II began because of Hitler's attack on Poland which was enabled due to appeasement.
"It was a terrifying day, I cannot describe everything that took place. You cannot imagine the barbarism of the Germans. I am completely broken and cannot seem to find myself."
-Dr. Zygmunt Klukowski, Polish Physician during Nazi Invasion of Poland
